Shamva, Zimbabwe – A group of hooligans masquerading as ZANU PF members have been accused of unleashing a violent attack on 46 mine workers at Element Minerals in Shamva, as they allegedly seek to illegally seize control of the mining operation.
The incident occurred after the group, led by an alleged ZANU PF Youths leader Josphat Zvomuya, Cllr Manyara, and Tongai Mazwienezara, declared a fake dispute over the mine, which they are reported to have lost when surveyors visited the site.
Provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Milton Mudembe confirmed the incident.
“We are aware of the incident that happened at the mine and no arrest has been done so far”
According to a police report filed under case number CR 92/7/24, the hooligans have been accused of inciting public violence during the attack on the mine workers.
Witnesses allege that Zvomuya, who has been name-dropping President Mnangagwa’s name, addressed an unsanctioned party meeting and claimed to have been sent to take over the mine.
“The guy is abusing the name of the First Family for his benefit. Claiming to have been sent,” said one of the witnesses, who also alleged that ZANU PF members Edzai Kamba and Lovemore Lunga, a war veteran, paid money to the “hired mob” that carried out the attack.
Despite the police report, the perpetrators are reported to be running free, and protected by their political influence.
The mines manager said they have reported the matter to the police and are waiting for law enforcement agents to take action.
“We have taken the matter to the police, we don’t believe in retaliation or violence, we will let the law take its course.
“People should not drag the name of the President in their dirty deals like what these men who attacked our workforce here,” said the mine manager.
