A TOTAL of 138 people died while 786 were injured from 2228 traffic accidents recorded throughout the country between December 15, 2023 and January 8, 2024.
The statistics marked a decrease of 32 deaths compared to the previous season when 170 traffic accident-related deaths were recorded.
However this year, number of injuries were a bit higher compared to 509 injuries that were recorded in 2 689 accidents during the comparative period.
National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said of the 2228 accidents, 98 were fatal ones.Asst Comm Nyathi said the Zimbabwe Republic Police will continue to enforce road rules and regulations without fear or favour.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police reiterates that drivers should be cautious on the roads and not cross flooded rivers and bridges to curb drowning incidences.
“The public is advised to report errant drivers on the roads at any nearest police station or call National Complaints Desk number 0242 703631 or WhatsApp on 0712 800 197,” he said.
Statistics are compiled annually for the festive season, which runs from from December to January 15.
Asst Comm Nyathi said the the final 2023-24 festive season accident statistics will be released on January, 16, 2024.
