In a major boost for cross-border traders, renowned bus operator Leonard Mukumba has donated a brand-new bus to the “Cross Borders for ED”.
The generous donation was announced during the launch of the Cross-Border Empowerment Fund in Kwekwe on Saturday.
Representing his father, Nyasha Mukumba, a director in the company, confirmed the donation and stated that the bus would be officially handed over to DJ Masomere today on behalf of the “Cross Borders for ED” group.
“We started with one bus, and now we have 650 buses. As the Operations Director, why would we hesitate to give you one bus?” he remarked, to a thunderous applause from the assembled cross-border traders.
He directly addressed Masomere, urging him to “come and collect the bus on Monday at the garage.”
During the same event, the Passenger Association of Zimbabwe (PAZ), represented by its Chairperson Samson Nhanhanga, also pledged to assist the cross-border traders’ association in acquiring an additional bus for their operations, following a request from the traders.
Nhanhanga used the platform to appeal to the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA) for increased engagement with cross-border traders and bus operators.
He highlighted the challenges faced by the transport industry due to numerous anti-smuggling roadblocks, which have led to goods confiscations and the impoundment of over 60 buses since December 2024.
“ZIMRA should conduct awareness campaigns clarifying the issues affecting the cross-border and transport industry,” Nhanhanga urged.
“Educate the cross-borders on the ‘dos and don’ts’ so that we avoid the cat-and-mouse games that have been created.”
