In a sector long regarded as the exclusive domain of men, Lorraine Katekwe is shattering stereotypes and redefining the role of women in mining.
As a Safety Officer at Kamativi Mining Company, Lorrain is not only excelling in her position but also inspiring a new generation of women to take up careers in this traditionally male-dominated field.
Lorrain’s journey to safety excellence began with a passion for protecting people and the environment. Growing up in a community surrounded by mining activities, she witnessed firsthand the impact of unsafe practices on workers and their families.
This sparked a desire to make a difference and ensure that mining operations are conducted in a safe and responsible manner.
With unwavering determination, Lorrain pursued a career in safety, overcoming numerous obstacles and challenges along the way.
“As a woman in a male-dominated industry, I faced skepticism and doubt from some of my colleagues.
“However, I refused to let their negativity hold me back. Instead, I used it as fuel to drive my success,” she recalls.
Her expertise in safety management has been instrumental in implementing robust safety protocols and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.
Katekwe’s achievements extend beyond her professional accomplishments.
She is a role model and inspiration to women and girls everywhere, demonstrating that with
hard work, determination, and resilience, they too can break down barriers and achieve their goals.
“Women are powerful, capable, and deserving of a seat at the table. We must take up space, assert our voices, and demand to be heard.
“The mining industry needs more women like me, and I am proud to be paving the way for future generations,” she said.
