Harare Mayor Jacob Mafume has dismissed reports of his recall from the townhouse, asserting that he remains committed to his day-to-day responsibilities.
Responding to circulating rumours, Mafume stated that he was fully engaged in his duties and emphasized his dedication to addressing pressing issues such as service delivery and the ongoing cholera outbreak.
The recall allegations stemmed from claims that Mafume, along with Mutare Mayor Simon Chabuka and his deputy Cloud Nengomasha, had aligned themselves with self-imposed party Secretary General Sengezo Tshabangu, thereby sowing discord within the Citizens Coalitions for Change (CCC), led by Nelson Chamisa.
Last week, reports emerged that several other councillors, including Bulawayo Deputy Mayor Edwin Ndlovu and two unnamed councillors from Marondera and Harare, had also been fired for similar reasons.
In an interview with Digital Telegraph, Mafume addressed the recall speculation, stating:
“I am at work as I speak. Last week, I was at Rufaro Stadium overseeing the final renovations ahead of the new Premier League football season.
“I prefer not to dwell on such matters (recalls) and instead focus on service delivery. We are currently grappling with issues like the cholera outbreak, which require our utmost attention.”
Mafume’s steadfast dedication to his role has garnered support from Harare residents, who commend his hardworking nature and commitment to improving service delivery.
His return to the position of Harare City Mayor came after Tshabangu recalled former Mayor Lovejoy Chitengu.
Tshabangu, a former MDC Provincial youth chairperson and MDC-N member, has been causing upheaval within the CCC by initiating the recall of its Members of Parliament.
