Trapped miners at the Redwing Mine have been confirmed as employees of Metallon Gold by the government, dispelling rumors circulating on social media.

As the rescue operation progresses, the Minister of Mines and Mining Development has directed Metallon Gold to suspend operations at the Redwing MineIn a press statement, Acting Minister of Local Government and Public Works July Moyo announced that rescue teams from Metallon Gold and Freda Rebecca Gold Mine are leading the rescue operation.

Minister Moyo also revealed that the government has suspended Metallon Gold’s operations at the mine.

“The accident occurred between 5:00 and 6:00 in the morning on Thursday, January 4, 2024, resulting in eleven individuals being trapped approximately 20 meters underground,” he said.

In response to the incident, the government has activated Civil Protection structures and assured the nation and the families of the miners that search and rescue operations will continue in the coming days.

The Ministry of Mines and Mining Development, along with experts from Metallon Gold and Freda Rebecca Gold Mine, are leading the rescue efforts.Minister Moyo emphasized the government’s commitment to supporting the affected families during this difficult time.

He also urged all miners to heed President Mnangagwa’s call for responsible mining practices to reduce the occurrence of accidents and prevent the loss of precious lives.
