Government says it is going to intensify war with street vendors in Harare’s Central Business District (CBD) in order to curb the cholera outbreak.
The Ministry of Health and Child Care’s most recent situation report states that 53 cholera deaths have been confirmed since the outbreak began in February.
A portion of the report states, “Zimbabwe has recorded 8 230 suspected cholera cases, 1 301 confirmed cases, 7 909 recoveries, 53 confirmed deaths, and 153 suspected deaths.”
Speaking during the post-Cabinet briefing on Tuesday, Health Minister Dr Douglas Mombeshora said the Harare City Council’s failure to stop the spread of cholera is forcing authorities to take measures.
“We have to save lives and stop this cholera spread and no one should be left doing the wrong things because we lose lives. So we have given HCC a week to take corrective measures, of which the government will move in with all stakeholders to take correct measures.
“This is happening from morning till evening and all these vendors are there in crowded places so we had the conversation with the municipality of Harare to take medium measures failure of which we will have to move in as government and definitely we have to remove these illegal vendors because they will cost us lives.
“Designated places have toilets, proper tables and running water to wash hands and fruits and that’s what we want to see taking place in Harare,” said Mombeshora.
